Ikea Hack Mid Century Modern Desk

Ikea Hack Mid Century Modern Desk

I desperately needed a desk in my guest room/office. I mean, it's not much of an office without a desk right? After scouring Craigslist for about a week and one failed attempt to pick up my dream desk, I decided to just hack one together.

After searching around for DIY desks, I decided to go the Ikea tabletop + fancy leg route. I'm not up to doing actual woodworking at this point. My father has lost 2.5 fingers due to circular saws so I stay far, far away from those. I promise it would take something crazy to loose a finger making the desk I came up with.

I went with the HILVER table top from Ikea, but you could probably use any table top. It is made out of bamboo and I thought it would look pretty sweet with a some hairpin legs. I'm pretty much obsessed with hairpin legs at this point guys.

I decided to go with 28" hairpin legs from hairpinlegs.com for just $11 a pop. Look at those beauts! So hairpin, so sexy...

Assembling was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Ikea HILVER table top
4 28" hairpin legs
12 1" screws, make sure your screw are shorter than your chosen table top! (I used the short screws from this IKEA set)
Drill and drill bit that is thinner than your screws

First you have to measure out where your holes are going. I did this by lining up the legs so they we're just inside the corner two predrilled holes (you can kind of see this better in the next pic). I then took a pencil and marked where the holes in the table leg were. Then I just drilled into the center of each of those spots, making sure that I didn't drill through the desk! I noticed with this table top that the corner holes were harder to drill through, it's apparently solid all the way through, and the two outer holes for each corner of the desk are in an air pocket area. So don't be alarmed when your drill suddenly flies down during those.

Then I just placed my table legs and screwed them in. I did this by hand.

I flipped it over and voila!

Then I just had to decorate will my cute desk stuff. Obviously the most fun part!
